Sport Fishing the
Queen Charlotte Islands Archipelago is a world class adventure
that attracts anglers from all over the world all year. Both the
ocean and the many rivers and lakes in the Charlottes are prime
fishing grounds for, both, the novice and experienced
fisherman.
Some of the remote and rugged wilderness islands in the archipelago
are home to
fishing lodges complete with accommodations,
guides, gear and privacy. Many are listed in Masset.
Others wishing to fish and sightsee, may chose
to stay at a village on the populated Graham and Moresby Islands
where there are fishing charters and accommodations
operating year round.
The ocean sport fishing is particularly good
because the island archipelago is the first encounter of land
for the migrating Pacific Chinook, Coho, and Chum Salmon as they
travel from the Arctic feeding grounds to their spawning grounds
in the Pacific Northwest.
The Charlottes is a prime stopping ground for the salmon because
the kelp beds are home to many herring and needlefish - a prime
food source. Other fish in the area, that adds
to the island fishing experience include lingcod
and ground fish like halibut.
The lakes and rivers of the Charlottes do not disappoint. It
is a fly fisherman's dream. Depending on the fresh water fishing
season and which river or lake you are on will play a big part
in whether you reel in a cutthroat, rainbow trout or dolly varden.
Some of the rivers and lakes are accessed by guide only, while
others are accessible by vehicle like the Tlell
(Tlell) and Sangan River (Masset) or the Mayer
(Tlell) and Skidegate
Lake (Sandspit). |
