Off Roading
the Queen Charlotte Islands leads to some amazing hiking
trails, mountain viewpoints, sandy beaches, lakes, rivers and,
unfortunately, some dead end roads. The area of the Charlottes
is actively being logged, so there is an established network of
active gravel roads pushing deep into the remote wilderness to
play on.
The off roading environment is
active, with many locals riding ATVs, motorbikes and 4X4s. Also
and more importantly, there is the massive logging vehicles traveling
the same roads as you, going about their day so keep the head
up. There are some marked logging roads with good signage and
some unmarked off-shoot roads with no signage and they lead to
destinations unknown.
Some of the main networks of gravel roads leading
into the remote back country of the Queen Charlottes is best accessed
in and around Port Clements
and Queen Charlotte
City on Graham Island and Sandspit
on Moresby Island.
There is no off road, ATV or motorbike
rental outfit on the islands so you need to gear up at home and
head off to the Charlottes for an adventure with your own off
road vehicle. It is wise to include some navigation equipment
and wilderness camping equipment if you plan on gong real deep
into the back country. |
