Wildlife Tours
and Guides located throughout the Queen Charlotte
Islands Archipelago in B.C. operate down-low by boat and some
by kayaks. Other tours, view wildlife, by float
plane so to get a birds-eye view while others luck out and see
wildlife on a self guided tour while hiking or backpacking one
of the trails when exploring Haida Gwaii.
Sometimes driving from one village to the other sightseeing can
prove to be a very successful. The roads lining the islands often
will have groups of miniature Sitka Deer grazing by the side of
the road. Black Bears can be seen crossing the road from one forest
into another. Bald Eagles and Blue Herons occupy the skies and
the wetland parks.
Many of the guides operate an interpretive tour
where they tell the story, point out the ancient villages, explain
the culture and the history of the local Haida First Nation people
of the Queen Charlottes. Wildlife Tours can range
from 1-2 hours to multi day wilderness camping adventures. The
tour companies provide the equipment, transportation and a guide.
The wildlife, flora and fauna on the Queen Charlotte
Islands is, in many cases, distinctive to the islands. Wildlife
viewing opportunities include the beautiful Black Bears, the miniature
Sitka Deer, the elusive River Otter, giants of the sea like Grey
Whales, Killer Whales, and their friends porpoises, dolphins,
plus birds like Bald Eagles, Blue Herons, Red Throated Loons,
etc.
Most of the Wildlife Tours leave from one of
the main villages. From the port-of-call the wildlife tours could
include trips to view the protected Gwaii
Haanas National Park Reserve and some of the Haida Ancient
Villages. A tour could lead to a visit to Hotspring Island or
the miles of sandy beaches covering East
Beach. |
